Conservation and Community Benefits

The Secoya Lodge, located in the heart of Ecuador’s Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, immerses visitors in the Ecuadorian Amazon and provides an authentic experience of the region’s culture and ecology.  The lodge is committed to preserving the culture and biodiversity that its visitors come to see—it is designed with the well-being of the region in mind.  The community-run lodge sets the standard for sustainability in two fields:

COMMUNITY (SOCIO-ECONOMIC & CULTURAL)

  • The local community owns and operates Secoya Lodge.  A “gremio” or “guild” of Secoya community members manages the business with the goal of preserving Secoya. The “gremio” invites discussion with ESTA members, park staff, and others in the operation of the Lodge.
  • Revenue generated by the lodge is reinvested directly into the community. By the end of its fifth year, the lodge will have generated over $100,000 US in profit, 100% of which will be invested in community healthcare and education.
  • The lodge creates employment for the community. The business has created 25 jobs in its first year in operation and will have generated $100,000 US in staff salaries by the end of its fifth year.

ENVIRONMENTAL

  • The business supports ongoing conservation projects in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. By our fifth year in operation, our conservation fund will have generated $20,000 US for local projects.
  • The lodge uses 100% renewable energy. The business relies upon solar power and other clean energy sources for all energy needs. Additionally, guide boats use new four-stroke motors, which are cleaner and quieter than cheaper two-stroke motors.
  • The lodge is constructed of all local materials. Additionally, all building materials have been sustainably harvested.
  • Guides will educate visitors about the dangers facing the Ecuadorian rain forest. Travelers will learn about how they can help end deforestation, the illegal excavation of resources, poaching, and oil exploration. They will be given the opportunity to donate to the lodge’s conservation fund.

Giving Back - Travelers' Philanthropy Opportunities

Each guest of Secoya Lodge gets the chance to plant a tree as part of the departure ceremony as a way to give back to the Amazon forest and the Secoya Community. Guests are also welcome to contribute to the ongoing community and conservation initiatives.
